Fieldbus ASIC for process automation
Softing, the leading technology supplier for fieldbuses and host process automation systems, has expanded its product range to include a powerful and flexible fieldbus ASIC. The UFC100-F1 (Unified Fieldbus Controller) supports both FoundationTM fieldbus and PROFIBUS PA.
The fieldbus ASIC developed in cooperation with Aniotek Inc. is a cost-efficient way of connecting field devices to these two bus systems for process automation. Its pin and software compatibility also make it a very economical alternative to existing solutions, such as the Yamaha YTZ420 ("FIND1+"). No modifications need to be made to the hardware or firmware of the field device if the bus system changes.
The compatibility of the UFC100-F1 was impressively demonstrated during conformity, interoperability and physical layer tests. The UFC100-F1 conforms to the IEC 61158-2 Physical Layer standard at 31.25 kbit/s and to the IEC 61158-4 Data Link Layer standard. It also complies with the RoHS directive.
The UFC100-F1 is particularly distinguished by its comparatively high jitter tolerance and a larger FIFO memory, which considerably reduces the number of interrupts to the processor in the field device. It also has a significantly higher resistance to interference, which is achieved through digital filters integrated in the UFC100-F1. Its lower energy consumption and wide temperature range (-40 to +85 °C) make it ideal for use in bus-powered field devices.
The new fieldbus ASIC has also been recognized by the Fieldbus Foundation, which welcomes the new solution. Stephen Mitschke, who is responsible for fieldbus products in the organization, said, "This adaptable and economical ASIC offers field device developers a number of advantages. It ensures the ongoing development of the interface to the fieldbus."
The forward-looking design of the fieldbus ASIC forms the basis for functional expansions and long-term availability. The UFC100-F1 is shipping now.
